Sir Bobby Robson ~ Sporting Legend As the old adage goes, if you can't change the people, you must change the people. But how do you go about spotting talent in people? Moreover, how do you match the correct person to a role? Who better to talk to about recruitment than a man who has a track record of getting recruitment unbelievably right time and time again! In his illustrious career Sir Bobby has recruited world class playing talent such as Ronaldo, Luis Figo, and Ruud Van Nistlerooy. Behind the scenes he recruited world class managerial talent such as Jose Mourinho and scouting legend Frank Arnesen. Sir Bobby's influence can still be seen in today's Champions. Mourinho has himself recently recruited Arnesen for a reported fee of £5 million - a figure unheard of for a non-player. But what price success? Come and hear a live interview with the mentor who recruited both. Sir Bobby Robson has been involved in top-level sport since the age of 15, joining Fulham FC at the age of 17 as a lively right-sided midfielder. Although enjoying a playing career which seen Sir Bobby gain 20 international caps, including playing in the 1958 World Cup, it was at the age of 34 where Sir Bobby truly excelled in a managerial career. After gaining experience in Canada with the Vancouver Whitecaps in 1967, Sir Bobby returned to England where he became involved in management at Fulham FC and Chelsea before enjoying his early major success with Ipswich Town. Sir Bobby's spell at Ipswich saw the club only finish once outside of the top six whilst qualifying for Europe eight seasons out of nine. After winning the FA Cup with Ipswich in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981, Sir Bobby joined the English National Side. He led the England team to the Quarter Finals of the 1986 World Cup and came close to reaching the 1990 World Cup Final losing out to West Germany in penalties. Although he enjoyed great success with England, Sir Bobby moved abroad into the Dutch football arena with PSV Eindhoven where he arguably enjoyed his most successful spell, winning the Dutch title in both seasons as Manager, nurturing talents such as Ronaldo. Title success continued in 1995 and 1996 with FC Porto before he became Manager of Spanish giants Barcelona. After signing Ronaldo, Barcelona won both the European Cup Winners' Cup and the Spanish Cup in 1997. Sir Bobby joined Newcastle United as Manager in 1999 helping the club move from a desolate 19th in the Premiership to finish the season at a respectable 11th. Newcastle, under Sir Bobby, reached the top four and qualified for the Champions League. During his time as Magpies Manager, he achieved the Barclaycard Merit Award at the League Managers' Association's annual dinner as well as receiving the honour of a Knighthood. Sir Bobby's expansive success at the top-level of international sport ensures a great depth of knowledge on which to explore during today's seminar. Directing such a large organisation requires a thorough focus on being effective. We offer you the chance to obtain an extremely useful perspective of how to be effective in a highly demanding and constantly changing environment. The well publicised reality of today's Police force is that effectiveness is the difference between continuing normality and experiencing all-to-real tragedy. Come and hear Michael Craik give insights into how effectiveness can be attained in such an environment. Originally from Heaton, Newcastle , Michael Craik joined the Met in London in 1977. Over the following 23 years, Michael's effective work led to his involvement in 22 major inquiries before becoming in charge of the murder squad. His position as Crime Commander saw Michael oversee 120 murder investigations. Academically, Michael has studied Human Physiology at Newcastle University as well as studying at Cambridge University for a Post-Graduate Degree where he was awarded with a MPhil in Criminology. Both well-read and highly experienced, Michael moved back to the North East in 2000 where he took the position of Deputy Chief Constable at Northumbria Constabulary. On April 1 st 2005, Michael's dedicated work resulted in his appointment as Northumbria Chief Constable. Northumbria Police is the sixth largest force in England and Wales with 4,166 officers and an annual budget of £240m. Upon assuming his new position, Michael immediately applied his master plan for a new era of ‘total policing'. Leading the force, Michael holds strong principles asking his officers to be “attentive, responsible, reliable, skilled, fair and polite”, something which he feels is key to effective action against crime. His hands-on approach has seen crime rates fall steadily. The total number of recorded offences has dropped from 157,051 to 142,122. As well as tackling crime, Michael has worked strenuously to improve the environment for citizens within the North-East. Operation Wipeout primarily concerns with a crack down on street vandalism and criminal damage which is gradually aimed at the complete removal of all graffiti within the North East. Away from his work with Northumbria Police, Michael enjoys spending time with his wife and teenage son. He supports Blyth Spartans FC and makes regular trips to see them play from his Newcastle-Upon-Tyne home. Michael's wealth of experience and extensive knowledge of knowing how important it is for individuals to act effectively and reach targets ensures an exciting interactive session today.

Leadership |
The modern business environment is chaotic and rapidly evolving. The change management panacea’s of the past are only as viable for today’s businesses as they are outdated. As of the millennium the only business strategies with longevity and reason are those that form around flexibility. Time brings with it new challenges, the evolution of the business environment necessitates an equal evolution of the leader. In this compelling seminar Steve discusses this leadership evolution, explores the key characteristics of the effective leader, and approaches how businesses can get the edge by creating the successful leaders of tomorrow |
Individual Top Level Performance |
Top level performance (TLP) is centrally concerned with being competitive against the very best there is to offer. We are all performers in some context or another but although people use terms such as ‘top level', ‘top drawer', ‘world class', and ‘elite' frequently, relatively few people understand exactly what top level performance demands from the individual. The key characteristics of such elite performing individuals are rarely pursued with as much vigour as that witnessed with regard to the latest management panacea such as TQM, Business Excellence, Six Sigma, Core Competencies, and all those before and since. The reality is that top level performance constitutes a myriad of actions, behaviours, interpretations, and executions – all ranging from overt to subtle in nature. Drucker's (2003) notion of ‘doing the right things, and doing things right' is obviously embodied by top level performance, but to merely accept the obvious without fully grasping the causal underlying factors hinders richer understanding of the phenomenon. Steve discusses how the business world can benefit greatly in progressing from using of superficial terms (e.g. world class, excellence) to a fuller understanding of the elite performance phenomenon. |
Teamwork |
We all know what makes a good team, right? It's only the ‘how to' part that is the obstacle. With his wealth of experience and inside knowledge on some of the most successful teams in recent memory, Steve gives a unique insight into the construction and day-to-day running of truly great teams. He believes that a team is a jigsaw – some of us are full of colour, others are just bits of sky, but all are necessary to make the jigsaw a success. Steve talks at length about how they dealt with key issues in teams that won championships and cups in both football and rugby. The possibility of transfer of these techniques into everyday business is astounding, and the potential for success thereafter high. Let Steve present to you a seminar that will stimulate, provoke and challenge all you know about teamwork. |
Motivation |
We live in fast paced times that drain our energy with every minute. Motivation has become a huge area to look at because that's what the workplace has begun to attack. The right motivation can put a good organisation ahead and get a faltering one back on track. In this energising presentation Steve reveals the motivational secrets behind some of the preparation used by many of Britain 's top sports stars, including Jonny Wilkinson and Jonathan Edwards. He talks about generating the fire within and the importance of refreshing not just the motives but the working environment and the personal relationships that make up that environment. Steve has a passion and a talent for bringing the best out of people, and this seminar will open your eyes to the techniques used in the pressure cooker of top level international competition.
